Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sponsors Patriot's Pen, a national youth essay contest open to students in grades six through eight. The contest was created to encourage students to have a better understanding and appreciation of America and patriotism. The theme for the 2018 Patriot's Pen was "Why I Honor the American Flag."
This year, BCA students swept first, second, and third place in this competition at the local level, VFW Post 9557. The winners of the local contest then advance to the VFW District level. Seventh grader Brayden Nguyen earned first place, sixth grader Emma Stiles earned second place, and eighth grader Annie Wagoner earned third place. Brayden and Emma advanced to the district level, where Emma earned first place! She then advanced to the state level, where she earned third place for all of California! Way to go, Emma!

On Friday, April 5, 2019, 13 BCA students competed at the District ACSI Junior High Speech Meet at Heritage Christian School in Mission Viejo. The speech meet is designed to help students learn the skills needed for public speaking while gaining self confidence. Students compete by reciting a memorized poem, passage, Bible verse, skit, or even an original speech. Five of our students competed individually, while the others competed on puppetry teams made up of four people each. Each of the students worked hard on their presentations and did a great job.

The ACSI District Math Olympics were held on March 15, 2019, and were hosted by BCA for the first time. Five schools participated in the Math Olympics and BCA had 17 students in 3rd-8th grade participate in the event, and 13 of those students placed for their grade and category (either computation or reasoning (word problems). Great job BCA students! Aside from a fun filled day of math calculations, the students worshiped together, lead by BBF associate pastor Greg Stiles and BCA junior high students, ate pizza, and played some awesome games. A good time was had by all!
